Our people:

Michael Cooper BA(law), LLB
Attorney & Conveyancer

Michael was admitted as an attorney & conveyancer in 1970 after completing his studies at the University of Pretoria (Tukkies). He practiced with Harvey Nossel in Pretoria, specialising in insurance matters, before moving to Cape Town to open a branch for them there. He later merged his practice to become Bester, Cooper, Grové & Wolfaardt after which he decided to practice for his own account as Cooper & Associates in Constantia, Cape Town. There he specialised in conveyancing whilst still maintaining an active litigation and general practice.

Subsequently, Michael ventured into the business world, engaging in a number of private enterprises. He launched his own legal consultancy advising on property and commercial ventures, focussing on foreigners investing in South Africa. These investments ranged from residential and commercial property investments to mining and exploration matters in South and Southern Africa. All the while he has continued advising on general litigation and commercial issues. This 40 years of experience provides clients with a wealth of understanding which can be brought to bear on their interests.

Michael is referred to by colleagues as being a straight down the line individual and a rare find in practice today. He is described as immensely thorough and pays enormous attention to detail. His preparation is immaculate and his ability to see matters from all perspectives is highly regarded.

Donovan Cooper Dip. Bus Comput, BA(law), LLB, SAQA NQF Assessor Attorney

Donovan obtained his degrees from the University of Stellenbosch (Maties) in 2002. He entertained his taste for adventure in 2003 by working for Galloway & Co Patent Agents and Trade Mark Attorneys in Harare (Zimbabwe) and Blantyre (Malawi) as well as engaging in other commercially orientated activities whilst travelling in Southern Africa. He returned to Cape Town for a short time where he worked at Standard Bank of South Africa Home Loans department, before going to the United Kingdom.

There he worked at Davies and Partners, in Bristol as part of the residential plot sales team, before moving to London to work with BCL Burton Copeland solicitors, one of the UK’s top criminal defence and financial regulatory advice firms. His work there included researching global anti-money laundering legislation for the HSBC Cash and Treasury Manager’s Handbook series.

Donovan returned to South Africa in early 2008 to join MA Cooper Attorneys and to complete his professional education through the University of Cape Town’s School for Legal Practice. He completed the Practical Legal Training (PLT) course with excellent results and was runner up in the National Litigation Competition hosted by the School. He was admitted as an Attorney of the Western Cape High Court in August 2009.

With an active interest in current affairs and business Donovan attends numerous public seminars and debates while keeping up a respectable sporting ethic. This allows him to provide a balanced view on matters and to see them from a different perspective ultimately resulting in the best possible service to clients.
